The Challenge

Our unique understanding of the various challenges faced by the network carriers gives us the capability to offer an RFID enabled network operations platform, which can streamline the supply chain and solve certain network operations.

Maintaining visibility of inventory across such a complex supply chain environment is crucial to keep costs down and still be effective in day-to-day operations. Without the adoption of technologies such as RFID to be able to obtain the expected level of visibility you will need a considerable amount of additional effort in terms of man-hours. This will also potentially slow down the movement of items in the supply chain. However, RFID could be used very effectively to provide automated visibility of the inventory, at the same time reducing the man-hours needed in inventory handling and certain network operations.

The inventory management organization is the inventory holder of assets across the entire network, at its various locations such as warehouses, central offices, remote terminals / cabinets, and subscriber locations. They need to ensure that sufficient quantities of inventory, as requested by its internal customers, such as network deployment and network operations, are always made available. Once equipment is available it is installed. Telecom companies are responsible for accurately maintaining the location, defect, and availability status of each piece of inventory. Inventory management organization also conducts field audits to perform inventory verification to meet regulatory compliance.

The Opportunity

The premise is predicated on the fact that new and old facilities or buildings require cable drops. These cables are run throughout the building behind walls and underneath the floors. These cables connect and provide power host servers, data centers and internal networks. Cables are often buried underground, behind walls and underneath floors. These cables are generally installed during the construction of a new building but often time the networking infrastructure requires new installs, referred to as “cable runs”. It’s the duty of the site surveyor to understand where the cable needs to start and end. Often these cables are positioned behind the walls in cable racks. This means that valuable time must be spent understanding where things are located which is a very time intensive manual process. Through our real-time location technology we can determine where the next cable drop needs to happen and determine if there is room to route cables. If there is not sufficient space, we can quickly identify an alternate route through our real time location technology.

The Solution

Lygase SmartTelcom™ business intelligence solutions offer various functionalities such as device management, data gathering and processing, along with central asset-management database updating. The application will ensure that the database tables are appended when new inventory items are added and kept up-to-date about the location, status and the time stamp of the last read item by a reader.

Lygase application software also has capabilities to set up rules to generate alerts based on events. For example, an event could be the stock levels of a particular item falling below set thresholds. This can be used to generate automatic stock transfer requests to ensure that the stock levels are brought back to the required levels. Alerts can also be sent to ensure that items are routed within set threshold based on the status of the item. For example, a defective item may have to be set to ship for repairs within a set number of days. This will also facilitate the tracking of vendor performance, such as the turn around times of repair, can be tracked on an item-by-item basis to ensure that SLAs are met. Our SmartTelcom™ web-based application will have the capability to create business rules, based on new processes implemented within network operations and inventory management organizations.
